The Importance of Antibody Testing in Dogs and Cats

Why should we do antibody testing?

Under normal circumstances, after vaccination, dogs and cats will produce corresponding antibodies in their bodies, which play a protective role.

Antibody testing is used to evaluate whether dogs and cats have produced antibodies that can fight against diseases in their bodies, and it also helps veterinarians determine whether there is a need for revaccination.

When should antibody testing be carried out?

  • Before vaccination:

For dogs and cats with a clear vaccination history: There is still a possibility that the vaccination effect may be affected by uncertain factors, such as immune tolerance, incubation period of infection, stress, and so on.

For dogs and cats with an unknown vaccination history: Especially for young pets that have just arrived home, it is necessary to check whether maternal antibodies remain in the body to prevent them from interfering with the vaccination effect, etc.

  • After vaccination:

If the antibody titer does not meet the standard, a booster vaccination injection is required or the vaccine for inoculation needs to be changed. If the antibody titer meets the standard, re-vaccination should be avoided to prevent immune tolerance.

When it is suspected that the pet may have been exposed to the source of infection: For example, traveling with the pet or having contact with stray animals, etc., all of these may increase the risk of disease infection. Antibody testing should be carried out as soon as possible, and screening should be done at the earliest.

Regularly check the antibody titer every year to ensure that dogs and cats have the ability to resist diseases. If it is not up to the standard, strengthen the vaccination or change the vaccine.

Antibody Testing is Very Necessary!

Only after confirming that the antibody titer meets the standard can the vaccine play a protective role for dogs and cats, and our furry friends can grow up healthy and happy.
